What is Supervision?

"... a forum for reflection and learning. ... an interactive dialogue between at least two people, one of whom is a supervisor. This dialogue shapes a process of review, reflection, critique and replenishment for professional practitioners.

Supervision is a professional activity in which practitioners are engaged throughout the duration of their careers regardless of experience or qualification. The participants are accountable to professional standards and defined competencies and to organisational policy and procedures(Davys & Beddoe, 2010: 21).

Why will I get from Supervision?

Professional supervision is considered to be a highly beneficial for your professional development. Deborah is not only focused on your professional development and skills she is also supportive of your emotional health and frame of mind. Providing you a safe space to explore your skills set, self-awareness, insights and personal learnings that best assist you to be the most effective therapist and coach you can be.

Uphold a Level of Professionalism

Supervision is Mandatory Requirement of Professional Associations, where practising members must complete a minimum number of hours of supervision each year. The purpose is to ensure that a high standard of competency of membership is followed. Supervisors assess and assist practitioners with their skills set as well as ensuring that professional conduct, responsibility and confidentiality meet the ethical guidelines of each association.

Some insurance policies including your public liability and personal indemnity may be null and void if membership requirements are not met each year.

Enhance your Emotional Intelligence

Working in the field of mental health can at times expose therapists to situations that may impose great demands on you either emotionally or physically. This demand if not recognised can lead you becoming enmeshed, over-involved or burnt out and could impact your result with your clients and business.

Part of the supervisor role is to encourage and support you monitoring your emotional challenges and workloads. Most importantly Deborah wants to ensure that you are meeting the needs of your clients, maintaining professional standards and exercising clear boundaries. You could say that supervisors act as a form of quality control for the public.

Getting a Different Perspective

Therapists like most people cannot always be objective about their own abilities, agendas, clients and practices. Supervision can provide that objectivity and give you a different perspective, alternative possibilities, which may be helpful when working with clients. Supervisors will highlight your strengths and abilities; bring awareness to possible blind spots with clients and help you create a plan or new ideas for challenging situations.
